The Story of Joe’s Pink Shorts

The pink shorts worn by inmates at Tent City, the famous former jail in Maricopa County, Arizona, became a symbol of the controversial policies and practices of former Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Arpaio, who served as Sheriff of Maricopa County from 1993 to 2017, was known for his tough-on-crime approach to law enforcement and his implementation of controversial programs and policies, including the use of pink underwear for inmates at Tent City.

The use of pink underwear (and other pink items) for inmates at Tent City was intended to prevent theft and as a form of humiliation to deter inmates from coming back to jail. In addition to the pink underwear, inmates at Tent City were also required to wear black-and-white striped uniforms and were not allowed to wear their own clothing.

Despite the controversy surrounding the pink underwear and other policies at Tent City, Arpaio remained a popular figure in Maricopa County and was re-elected as Sheriff several times. However, in 2017, Tent City was closed down shortly after Arpaio left office, and the pink underwear became a symbol of his controversial tenure as Sheriff. Today, the pink shorts continue to be a source of fascination and debate, with some people seeing them as a symbol of harsh and punitive justice, while others see them as a unique and playful expression of style.
